The Century P-2 Sparring Gear Set is a very good set of sparring gear. It’s the latest and greatest that Century has to offer in the way of sparring gear. It's perfect for most styles of Karate. In fact when you attend a Karate point tournament, you’ll see most of the competitors wearing the Century gear. It’s either the student (older) style sparring gear or the new Century P-2 style gear. The long and the short of the Century P-2 Sparring Gear is that it looks sharp, it’s durable, it’s long lasting, provides good protection, a proven product and it’s approved for most any Karate point tournament. Unlike the GI which has to be changed after every single event!

★ The P-2 Head Gear I like the open face so I can see and breath better. The P2 design offers great peripheral vision. I also like the double padding on high impact areas such as the temple, forehead, ears and the back of the head. The head gear also has holes for ventilation which also acts as a pressure release for the air when you get kicked or punched. Besides offering good protection the new P2 gear is comfortable. I like the fit, the feel, the ventilation and the looks of the Century P2 Headgear. This gear is open face with a chin strap that secures with an adjustable Velcro strap. While it offers the martial artist better vision and breathing, it lacks in protecting the face.

★ The P-2 Sparring Gloves The Century P2 Sparring Gloves are a very good sparring glove. It features extra double layer dipped foam padding which provides good protection for your hands and your sparring opponent. The gloves are also ventilated which makes it where your skin can breath and you feel less sticky. The gloves are also contoured which helps keeps your hands in a fist. This keeps you from getting as many finger jams or sprains and you are less likely to accidentally get a finger in your opponents eye. The gloves are also made real well. If your using them for light contact sparring they will last for quite some time. Lastly they are a good looking glove and very lightweight.

★ The P-2 Foot Gear The Century P-2 Foot Gear is a good product as well. You can kick and be kicked with this foot gear and not get hurt. Keep in mind when you are training and even sparring in a tournament that you are not trying to intentionally hurt your training partner. This type of gear makes it possible to do some great training at about three-quarter speed without hurting people. Any foot gear works well for Round and crescent kicks. Foot gear doesn’t provide any padding for a side or front kicks. So when you throw these kicks they should be low-speed or not at all. They do work well for the round kicks. The foot gear is easily put on. You slide your bare foot into this shoe type foot gear. It has a long elastic strap with Velcro. This strap starts at the heel, goes over the top of the foot, under the bottom, back over the top (forming an X) and back around to the hell where it is secured by Velcro. This elastic strap is ideal. It allows you to tighten the footgear as much as you like. I recommend tight but not so tight when your opponent grabs your foot it makes the gear rip. Have it loose enough that it pops off should you have your foot grabbed when you’re sparring. The foot gear is always the first to wear out. The two small plastic strips on the bottom tend to wear out and break. I tape these straps the day I get them. This way the tape wears out instead of the plastic and they last longer. The bottom is 90% open and the top of the pad has three holes, so the ventilation is real good.

Conclusion

Century is a proven name in Martial Arts gear. They have been making quality products for a long time. They were around when I first started Martial Arts in 1978, so thirty years that I know of. As a leader in the industry they are always trying to improve on their products and their prices are decent, especially if you buy the gear as a set. It’s more expensive if you buy the gear separately. For Karate style point tournaments the Century P-2 Sparring Gear Set is the most popular. Top Ten is a better product but pretty expensive. The P-2 gear is a newer product and it looks very sharp. The gear is built well and tends to last quite a while. It provides good protection. The gear is east to get on and take off. It’s also easy to clean; wipe down with warm soapy water. The Century P-2 Sparring Gear Set can be purchased in several color schemes (listed above).
